Shakib Al Hasan named in FIR for an alleged murder case amid protests in Dhaka – Report

New Delhi: Veteran Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan is reportedly said to be charged in an alleged murder case happened during the protests in Dhaka earlier this month. A case of a garment worker was filed on Thursday at the Adabdor police station in Dhaka.

According to multiple reports, Rafiqul Islam, father of the deceased Mohammed Rubel, filed the case. A report from Cricbuzz mentioned that 154 leaders and activists of political party Awami League were accused for the murder of Rubel.

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, Shakib, a former member of parliament of Awami League, was listed 27th or 28th on the list of accused in the first information investigation (FIR). Apart from Shakib, former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled away from the country amid protests, was also named in the FIR.

Rubel participated in the protests called by the Anti-Discrimination Student movement on August 5. He was hit by a bullet during the movement and died on August 7.

However, Shakib wasn’t present in Bangladesh at the time of this horrific incident. The Bangladesh all-rounder was in Canada on August 5, leading the Bangla Tigers Mississauga against Surrey Jaguars in Brampton in the Global T20 Canada 2024. Before that, the 37-year-old player was in the USA to participate in the Major League Cricket from July 26 to August 9, where he played for Los Angeles Knight Riders.

It was only in January this year when Shakib became a MP after winning the general elections from his hometown in Magura.
