New Delhi: Ace Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has very little time left to convince the BCCI selectors to pick him for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as per a report. The seasoned Indian pacer returned to competitive cricket in the Ranji Trophy after a long spell on the sidelines due to an injury suffered during the ODI World Cup 2023.
As per reports, Shami is being constantly monitored by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team and they have assessed that the pacer needs to lose some weight and regain fitness before a possibility of his inclusion in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following an impressive showing in his first Ranji Trophy match back for Bengal, Shami will be evaluated on a few Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) T20 games.
BCCI’s strict condition for Shami
The medical team, which is monitoring Shami, feels that he will start losing weight which he gained during the one year slowly as he continues playing matches. This will help in building his endurance and since the Ranji games are over, the first round of SMAT matches have been kept as a makeshift yardstick.
As per multiple media reports, BCCI’s head of sports science Nitin Patel and National Cricket Academy (NCA) trainer Nishant Bordoloi are in charge of the fast bowler’s training and recovery during his time with his Ranji side Bengal. It has further been notified that Shami may not be rushed into playing international cricket which puts his participation in the remining BGT matches doubtful.
Keeping in mind the upcoming Champions Trophy, which is a vital ICC tournament, the BCCI will take it’s own course of time before taking a call on the seamer. If Shami’s recovery is on track, he is most likely to be included for the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane.
