New York: A new, alarming video has surfaced on social media, showing a woman passenger assaulting an Uber driver with pepper spray while he was on the phone. The incident occurred Tuesday night around 11:20 p.m. on Lexington Avenue, East 65th Street in New York.
In the video, Jennifer Guilbeault and a friend are seen in the backseat of an Uber. Guilbeault deliberately sprays pepper spray at the driver, who tries to escape the vehicle. Despite her friend’s efforts to stop her, Guilbeault sprays again, intensifying the situation. The driver eventually manages to flee the car.
Guilbeault’s friend is heard yelling, “What the f**k did you do?” after the driver has escaped. The driver declined medical assistance for eye discomfort, according to officials.
Guilbeault was arrested around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. She received a desk appearance ticket and was released, with a court appearance scheduled for the following day.
The motive behind the unprovoked attack remains a mystery, and police is investigating both sides to unfold the real reasons which lead up to the incident.
Uber has permanently banned Guilbeault from their platform. An Uber spokesperson stated, “The rider’s actions shown in the video are deplorable. Violence is not tolerated, and the rider has been banned from the Uber platform. We will support police in their investigation however we can.”
The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) also condemned the attack. TLC Commissioner David Do said, “Violence against our city’s drivers, who work tirelessly to provide essential services and earn a living, is utterly unacceptable and deeply disturbing. We urge anyone who witnesses or experiences such behavior to report it immediately to the NYPD.”
