New Delhi: During pregnancy, diet is one of the most important factors that can directly and indirectly influence the health of the mother and foetus alike. On the one hand, while ginger, papayas and spicy food are advised against, there are some cases wherein one does not choose the right kind of foods and drinks for a healthy pregnancy – one such food option is avocados. Despite being on the expensive side, this creamy fruit has the nutrients that can work wonders to keep the heart and mind healthy of the mother and the baby.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Shweta Jaiswal, Senior Dietician at Sharda Hospital, spoke about how avocados are the ideal food option for pregnant women.

“Avocados are highly beneficial during pregnancy due to their rich nutritional profile, making them a valuable addition to a healthy diet. They are packed with essential nutrients that support both maternal health and fetal development. Firstly, avocados are a great source of healthy fats, primarily monounsaturated fats, which are crucial for brain development and overall growth of the fetus. These fats also help in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, all of which are important during pregnancy,” she said.

The expert went on to say that avocados are high in fibre, which aids in digestion and helps prevent constipation, a common issue during pregnancy. This fiber content also contributes to a feeling of fullness, which can help manage weight gain.

Avocados are rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin C, potassium, and folate (vitamin B9). Folate is especially vital during pregnancy as it helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure, which is crucial for preventing conditions like preeclampsia.

Moreover, avocados contain antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which promote eye health for both the mother and the developing baby. Another significant benefit of avocados is their low sugar content compared to other fruits, making them a suitable choice for maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
