Shreyas Iyer breaks Mitchell Starc’s record to become most expensive player in IPL history

New Delhi: Team India star Shreyas Iyer created history at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction on Sunday, becoming the most expensive player in the tournament’s history. Punjab Kings (PBKS) were involved in a bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC) for Iyer and broke the bank to sign him for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Iyer was one of the biggest names in the IPL 2025 mega auction and was expected to trigger a bidding war between the teams. As expected, DC and PBKS were involved in an intense bidding war for the star India batter, who is also a potential captaincy candidate. Iyer was eventually sold to Punjab Kings for 26.75 crore, breaking Mitchell Starc’s record to become the most expensive pick in IPL history.

Starc was sold to KKR for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 mini auction last year. At the auction on Sunday, Iyer shattered the record held by his former KKR teammate. The Team India star was released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction despite having led his former franchise to a memorable triumph in IPL 2024 earlier this year.

Rs 2 crore to Rs 26.75 crore

Iyer had listed himself at the base price of Rs 2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction but saw his price shot up past the Rs 26 crore mark, thanks to the bidding war between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. It was KKR who started the proceedings after Iyer’s name was announced at the auction before the likes of Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals entered the battlefield.

Both DC and PBKS flexed their financial might and remained involved in an intense battle till the end before Punjab edged out the Capitals to secure their desired target. Punjab Kings headed into the auction with the biggest purse and were looking to secure a potential captaincy candidate and they might have managed to get an ideal candidate in Iyer, who might lead PBKS in IPL 2025.

Arshdeep Singh retained by Punjab Kings for Rs 18 crore

Meanwhile, Team India pacer Arshdeep Singh was retained by the Punjab Kings for a sum of Rs 18 crore. The left-arm pacer was the first player to go under the hammer at the IPL 2025 mega auction and saw many teams fight for his signature. Arshdeep was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 15.75 crore initially but PBKS decided to use their RTM option for the pacer.

SRH eventually raised their final bid to Rs 18 crore which was matched by the Punjab Kings as they managed to keep hold of the Indian pacer.
