Shubman Gill surpasses Virat Kohli in elite list after unbeaten ton vs Bangladesh

New Delhi: Shubman Gill shut down his critics in style with a magnificent century for India in the ongoing 1st Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Gill, who was dismissed on an 8-ball duck in the first innings, bounced back in style with an unbeaten knock of 119 runs in India’s second innings.

Walking out to bat at no.3, Gill batted brilliantly towards the end of the day’s play on Day 2 to help India post 81/3. Resuming his innings on 33, the prolific right-hander looked in great touch and control as he made the Bangladesh bowlers toil hard. Gill joined hands with fellow centurion Rishabh Pant to share a 167-run stand for the 4th wicket and take India’s lead past the 500-run mark.

Gill’s 119 not out was laced with 10 fours and 4 sixes while Pant scored 109 off 128 balls studded with 13 fours and 4 sixes. The duo took the Bangladesh bowlers to the cleaners, helping India dominate the proceedings on Day 3. Thanks to the duo’s ton, India declared their 2nd innings on 287/4 to amass a whopping lead of 514 runs and set Bangladesh a daunting target.

Shubman Gill goes past Virat Kohli

It was Gill’s fifth century in Test cricket for India as he went past Virat Kohli on the list of batters with the most centuries for India in the World Test Championship (WTC). All of Gill’s five Test tons have come in the WTC while Kohli has so far managed only 4 centuries in the competition’s history. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma leads the elite list with 9 centuries to his name in WTC.

Gill has so far notched up 1611 runs in 26 Tests at an average of 37.46 in the World Test Championship. Rohit is the leading run-getter for India in the competition with 2563 runs from 33 matches at an average of 63.35. Rohit is just one short of becoming only the 4th batter in the world to reach the milestone of 10 centuries in the WTC.
