New Delhi: Ahead of the India Champions vs Pakistan Champions final match of the World Championship for Legends, former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir said the fans will have something to be delighted after the senior men team’s dismal show at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The Babar Azam-led Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage, having lost to tournament co-hosts USA in their Group A encounter in a nail-biting Super Over. USA and eventual champions India made the cut from Group A after Pakistan failed to live up to its stature.
Sohail Tanvir, who is part of the bowling unit of Pakistan Champions in the World Championships for Legends, has assured fans back at home to cheer for something. The left-arm seamer said the team is motivated to bring happiness before their fans’ faces.
“There was a great disappointment for people due to Pakistan’s performance in T20 World Cup 2024, so we talked that the Legends league may not have the same level but people will be happy. We saw the response and got the motivation that people are following this league,” Tanvir told a local news channel, as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
“When we came here, Younis [Khan] bhai, Shahid [Afridi] bhai and all the other players, we talked that people in Pakistan are crazy for cricket, so our goal was to bring happiness to those who were watching us play, I mean it couldn’t be the same as World Cup but it would be something, that was and is our motivation,” he added.
“India vs Pakistan final will always be huge no matter where it is played” – Sohail Tanvir
Pakistan finished second in the six-team league stage with four wins from five matches. The Younis Khan-led side defeated West Indies legends by 20 runs to set up an intriguing final with India Champions. Tanvir, who was part of a few India-Pakistan matches at the international stage, reckoned that the rivalry is not just limited to mainstream cricket but will continue at the legends level as well.
“Now we have one step left. India vs Pakistan final will always be huge no matter where it is played and which league, people will watch. We won the pool match against them but the final is final. I still haven’t forgotten the final against India in 2007. So, let’s see what happens tomorrow, we will do our best to be on the victorious side,” Tanvir concluded.
Pakistan Champions won by 68 runs against Yuvraj Singh’s men in their Pool match at Edgbaston in Birmingham, a venue where the two sides will again compete for the championship on Saturday.
