Palakkad : An approximately 10-feet-high statue in the memory of the ever-loving playback singer SP Balasubramanyam is in the making and is all set to be unveiled sometime during the end of 2024 in Palakkad. The statue that is being considered as a fitting tribute to the legendary singer is considered the first of its kind in the country for SPB as he is popularly known as among the music lovers around the globe.
The idea of the statue to be constructed and unveiled was nurtured among the minds of a group of playback singers under the initiative called SAMAM, an association of playback singers of the Malayalam film industry that was formed in 2018. The statue is considered as an honorarium by the playback singers in Malayalam who considers SPB as a source of inspiration for the youngsters.
“On a personal note we have been eagerly planning to give a fitting tribute to SPB sir for quite some time now. Indeed his demise was entirely shocking and a huge loss for the entire country and the music world. The statue is a token of love and affection from all Malayalees”, said Afsal, well known playback singer to News9.
The statue, the clay model of which is completed is being crafted by Unni Kanayi, a well-known sculptor in Kanayi in Kannur district. The statue that is planned to be erected at Palakkad , the town which holds high appreciation and culture of music and other art forms. The lead faces of ‘SAMAM’ considers the unveiling of the statue as a mark of respect to the wonderful musician who passed during Covid times and it is first of its kind across the nation.
“It was indeed a honour for me to work on this statue. I had listened to his songs throughout my childhood days and now when I am making his statue by listening to his songs, it is indeed a very emotional moment for me. It was comparitevely easy for me to make the structure as his face is very familiar. Its been four months since the work has started and I am expecting it to be completed in the next four months”, said Unni Kanayi to News9.
He said that the clay structure is been made and from here a mould will be prepared using plaster-of-pairs and following which the glass metal will be made. The final structure will be prepared using glass metal.
SAMAM, the sole association of the playback singers of the Malayalam film industry, was established in 2018. The association is headed by Padmavibhooshan Dr K J Yesudas as its Chairman and Padmasri K S Chitra And Sri MG Sreekumar being the Vice Chair persons. Sri P Jayachandran heads the advisory board of the association. Samam, which was established mainly for the welfare of the playback singers ,had strongly intervened in the society whenever it was necessary.
Right from the first year Samam , on identification of some needy veteran playback singers, had started a scheme of providing pension. The scheme is going unintermittedly and successfully from the day of inception till date.
Most of the fund of the association moves to the support measures extended to the needy singers , orchestra players and the society at large.
