Spin in death overs? Ravindra Jadeja hints at India playing 3 spinners in Super 8s of T20 WC 2024

New Delhi: Team India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja believes spinners will have an important role to play for the Men in Blue in the upcoming Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. India played all their group-stage matches in New York where the fast bowlers enjoyed bowling on pace-friendly wickets. The spinners were rarely utilised and had little role to play in India’s dominant run.

India qualified for the Super Eight as the top-ranked team from Group A after remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage. They defeated Ireland in their opening game of the tournament before beating Pakistan and the USA in their next two matches to bag three wins in a row. India’s final group stage against Canada was washed out due to rain.

The action will now shift to the Caribbean in the Super Eight where spinners are expected to generate a lot more assistance from the pitches and conditions compared to the fast bowlers. Jadeja, who has significant experience playing in the Caribbean and spin-friendly pitches back home, believes the spinners will have a huge role to play in the Super Eight and might be used in the death overs as well.

“Whenever we play in the West Indies, the wicket remains a bit slow and dry. The match timing is also in the morning so spinners will have help. Even in India, there are many wickets where spinners get help. So it is a good thing that spinners will get help here in the middle overs. You could see spinners being used in the death overs as well,” said Jadeja.

Will India play 3 spinners in their playing XI?

India played all three of their completed matches in the group stage without a specialist spinner in their XI as all-rounders Jadeja and Axar Patel led the spin attack. Specialist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal remained on the bench for all three games. However, one of Kuldeep or Chahal might return to the XI in the Super 8 stage where the matches will be played in West Indies.

India can include three spinners in their playing XI if they want to retain both Jadeja and Axar, who will also provide stability with the bat. Kuldeep might pip Chahal on current form but it remains to be seen what bowling combination will India pick when they take on Afghanistan in their first Super 8 game on Thursday, June 20.
