New Delhi: Sri Lanka appointed Charith Asalanka as captain of their T20I team that would face newly-crowned world champions India in a three-match series.
The series begins on July 27, followed by matches on July 28 and 30. All the games will be played in Pallekele after which the two teams will engage in a three-match ODIs in Colombo.
The all-rounder would replace Wanindu Hasaranga, who resigned as the 20-over format captain after Sri Lanka couldn’t qualify for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup that was held in the USA and West Indies last month.
The 27-year-old comes had earlier led Sri Lanka in two T20Is in their tour of Bangladesh earlier this year when Hasranga was suspended.
Asalanka has been captain of Sri Lanka’s U-19 team and has led led Jaffna Kings to the LPL title this season.
Sri Lanka Cricket announced its 16-member squad to face India in which Dinesh Chandimal was called back to the team while the uncapped Chamindu Wickramasinghe also earned a call-up.
Their ODI team will be led by Kusal Mendis the Test team is under the stewarsdip of Dhananjaya de Silva, who alongwith veteran Angelo Mathews did not find a place in the T20I squad though Hasaranga kept his place.
A new captain will be in charge of India too with Suryakumar Yadav being the chosen one following the retirement of Rohit Sharma after their triumphant World Cup campaign.
