New Delhi: The much-anticipated comeback of India’s superstar batters in the Ranji Trophy fizzled out after the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill failed miserably for their respective teams in the Round 6 of India’s premier red-ball domestic event on Thursday.
Following a horror run in Australia, Rohit made a Ranji comeback almost after a decade to get some runs and form under his belt ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy but the India skipper failed to fire in Mumbai’s first innings against Jammu and Kashmir and continued his miserable run with the bat.
Rohit’s horror run continues
Rohit was dismissed early for just 3 runs after missing a pull shot off Umar Nazir. The seasoned batter was caught in two minds and got the leading edge which J&K skipper Paras Dogra caught at mid-off.

Rohit’s India opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal’s (4) stay at the crease was also short.
The left-handed batter was trapped in front of the wicket by Auqib Nabi, who took advantage of the fresh wicket to move the new ball dangerously off the spicy surface at the BKC Ground.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, another star batter, who was named in the squad for the Champions Trophy (11) was caught at mid-on off pacer Yudhvir Singh.
Pant, Gill fail to impress
Elsewhere in Rajkot, Pant featured for Delhi in a first-class game for the first time since the 2017-2018 season but his comeback at the crease did not last long. The dashing left-hander was dismissed for 1 by veteran Saurashtra left-arm spinner Dharmendrasingh Jadeja. Pant is facing off against his India teammate Ravindra Jadeja, who is also part of the Saurashtra playing eleven.
Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, star batter Shubman Gill, playing for Punjab, was caught behind for 4 against Karnataka. He was dismissed by Abhilash Shetty in the fourth over of the innings.
After furore over their red-ball form and BCCI’s mandate for contracted players’ participation in domestic cricket following the series loss in Australia, the Indian stars have made themselves available for the Ranji Trophy.
