Stay Safe from Dengue: Expert shares simple tips to boost platelet count naturally

New Delhi: Delhi and other parts of north India received rain showers on Thursday morning. No doubt it offered a sigh of relief from the fierce heatwave but with the advent of monsoon, dengue cases have intensified in Bangalore and some regions in Ghaziabad. Banglore recorded over 1000 dengue cases in the last 20 days. Ghaziabad is also intensifying its efforts to combat the vector-borne diseases typically dengue. According to officials, the district reported 12,61 dengue cases in 2023 which is the highest count in the last six years.

Dengue infections usually start to spike with the advent of monsoon season, as the humid weather makes it a breeding ground for the infected mosquitoes. Dengue is a viral disease that is caused by the bite of an Adese Aegypti mosquito. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about half of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue with an estimated 100-400 million infections occurring every year.

In conversation, with News9, Dr Sheela Chakravarthy, Director – Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru shared with News9, “Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by a daytime mosquito bite(Aedes species mosquitoes). The patients generally have severe body pain. The outcome of dengue is dependent on the reaction of the body to the dengue virus. All patients do not behave similarly. Generally, patients have a fever for five days with severe body pain.”

“While paracetamol can be used for pain relief, other painkillers are contraindicated for these patients. The dose of the paracetamol should not exceed 2 g in a day. The second best way to manage is bed rest as the virus involves the large muscles of the body, particularly the thighs. Patients feel very exhausted,” added Dr Chakravarthy.

Temperature affects the dengue spread

The temperature plays a vital role in the spread and transmission of the virus. In humid weather dengue virus spreads rapidly as weather can speed up the mosquito’s development, leading to a faster reproductive rate and increased mosquito abundance. This as a result can create a higher probability of human-mosquito contact and increases the potential of their transmission.

How to boost platelet count naturally?

According to Dr Chakravarthy, “Rest is required to relieve oneself from this symptom. Patients are generally low on blood pressure which can be manifested as a faint. The treatment for this is to take lots of fluids with a little salt in it, lime juice with salt or buttermilk with salt or soups. There are no safe drugs available in the market, although carripill is a new papaya extract which is being prescribed, there are no clear indications for its benefits.”

Complications of dengue include bleeding from unusual sites. Low blood pressure amounting to fainting and platelet levels of less than 50,000 is an indication for admission. The outcome of the infection is variable and therefore patients should visit a hospital to address the seriousness of the disease. Most of the patients can be handled at home, only the complicated ones need help in the hospital.
