Steve Jobs’ 1995 Critique of Microsoft Goes Viral Amid Major Windows Outage

Steve Jobs’ harsh critique of Microsoft from 1995 has resurfaced online just as the tech giant grapples with a major Windows outage affecting millions of users and critical services worldwide.

Jobs’ assessment of Microsoft as a company that produces “third-rate products” was brought back into the spotlight on Friday. In an interview with tech journalist Bob Cringely, Jobs criticized Microsoft’s approach to design and innovation, saying, “The only problems with Microsoft is that they have no taste… they have absolutely no taste. I don’t mean that in a small way… I mean that in a big way. They don’t think of original ideas and don’t bring much culture into their products.”

Jobs further explained, “Proportionally-spaced fonts come from typesetting and beautiful books. That’s where one gets the idea (and) if it weren’t for the Mac, they would never have that in their products.” He expressed his disappointment not with Microsoft’s success, but with what he saw as a lack of innovation in their products.

Jobs’ old comments garner spotlight amidst global IT outage

The timing of Jobs’ comments’ resurgence is notable, as Microsoft is currently dealing with a significant outage linked to a recent update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm. Microsoft reported that the error stemmed from a “configuration change in a portion of our Azure backend workloads” which disrupted connectivity and affected Microsoft 365 services.

In response, Microsoft has been working to restore affected services and is rerouting impacted traffic to alternate systems to minimize disruptions. CrowdStrike has identified the issue related to the content deployment and has reversed those changes, offering steps for Windows users to address the problem.

Outage has had widespread impact

The outage has had a wide-ranging impact, affecting not only commercial services like airlines but also critical providers such as police and government services around the world.

As Microsoft continues to address the issue, Jobs’ critique has gained renewed attention, adding an ironic twist to the company’s current challenges.
