New Delhi: Days after he amazed everyone with a sensational century in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Steven Smith roared in his first Big Bash League (BBL) match on Saturday. Smith had not played a single T20I game since almost an year and was not even picked for the T20 World Cup 2024 but the Aussie batter enthralled everyone with a fiery century, his fifth in the T20 format.
Representing Sydney Sixers in a game against Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 11, Smith played an unbeaten knock of 121 runs as an opener, equalling the record for most centuries in the history of the Big Bash League. This was his third ton in the event as he smashed 10 boundaries and seven sixes to wreck havoc on the opposition bowlers. Ben McDermott, Hobart Hurricanes opener, is the only other batter with three hundreds in BBL history.

Smith’s ton powers Sixers to win
A fiery century from Steve Smith powered Sydney Sixers to a big win against Perth Scorchers in the 30th match of BBL. Batting first, the team scored a mammoth 220/3 in the stipulated 20 overs with Smith emerging as the top-scorer with an unbeaten 121-run knock off just 64 deliveries. Apart from Smith’s blistering knock, skipper Moises Henriques was the second-best scorer with 46 runs. Behrendorff and Aston Agar picked a wicket each for the Scorchers.
In the chase, the Scorchers tried a lot but ultimately fell 14 runs short of the target. Ashton Turner played a captain’s knock with an unbeaten score of 66 while Sam Fanning gave a good start to the team up front with 41 runs. Cooper Connolly and Matthew Spoors also contributed with 33 and 28 runs but still the team could not cross the finish line. Sean Abbott shined for the Sixers with 4 wickets.
