New Delhi: Fans were left wondering about Sanju Samson’s exclusion as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the four squads for the Duleep Trophy 2024-25. Samson’s name was missing from the list of four squads, leaving fans surprised. The wicket-keeper batter had pulled out of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) to play in the Duleep Trophy, however, he was not picked in any of the squads.
On expected lines, the likes of Test skipper Rohit Sharma, senior batter Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin’s names were missing from the squads. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was also not included as he will be playing for Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup in English County. However, Samson’s exclusion left fans baffled.
India regulars like Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were all named in the squads ahead of the Test series against Bangladesh. The India regulars are playing in the Duleep Trophy to prepare for India’s upcoming 2-match Test series against Bangladesh next month.
In its release, BCCI clarified that the players who will be selected in India’s Test squad for the Bangladesh series will be subsequently replaced in the Duleep Trophy after the 1st round of matches. The board also mentioned that all-rounder Nitish Reddy’s participation will be subject to fitness. However, there was no mention of Samson.

Samson was part of India’s squad in the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka where he bagged ducks in the first two matches. India won the T20I series 3-0 but ended up suffering a shock 2-0 series defeat against the host in ODIs.
Gill, Gaikwad, Shreyas and Easwaran named captains
Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead their respective teams in the Duleep Trophy 2024-25. Gill will lead Team A consisting of some of the big names like Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag among others. Easwaran will lead Team B which comprises the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Rishabh Pant among others.
Gaikwad will be in charge of Team C which has players like Sai Sudharsan, Umran Malik, Suryakumar Yadav and Rajat Patidar among others. Shreyas Iyer will lead Team D which consists of the likes of Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana and Devdutt Padikkal among others. The tournament will get underway from September 05.
