Suhas Yathiraj settles for silver medal after humiliating loss at Paris Paralympics

New Delhi: Star Indian para-shuttler Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj had to settle for a silver medal in the men’s singles SL4 badminton event after a humiliating loss 21-9, 21-13 at the hands of Lucas Mazur of France at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday. With this, Suhas has claimed back-to-back silver medals at the Paralympics, having clinched it in the Tokyo Games as well in 2020.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old Mazur has successfully defended his title, having won the gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympics 2024. In a repeat of the Tokyo final, Mazur – the homeboy, showed his home dominance and it seemed he left Suhas with no choices. Even when Suhas was winning the points, there was close to no celebration on his face. Although he showed occasional intent, it was too late as Lucas completed a cakewalk.

In what turned out to be a lopsided gold medal clash, Suhas had no answers to the corner smashes of homeboy Mazur who dominated the court at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris. There was a clear lack of intent in the Indian para-shuttler who was lacklustre in even responding to Mazur’s basic hits. Meanwhile, Mazur was a total crowd puller in the arena who had a massive home support and was cheering them up after each point win.

41-year-old Suhas had beaten compatriot Sukant Kadam 21-17, 21-12 in the men’s singles SL4 semifinal to cruise into a successive gold medal match at the Paralympics.
