New Delhi: Para-javelin ace Sumit Antil endured a record-breaking outing at the Paris Paralympics 2024 with a successive gold medal triumph in the men’s javelin throw F64 category final at the Stade de France in Paris on Monday. Sumit was one of India’s brightest medal hopes and he lived up to the expectations of the nation with a monstrous effort of 70.59 metres in his second attempt, when it mattered the most.
All this time in the build-up to the Paris Games, he talked about having faith in himself and delivering his best. He put up an exact representation of what he talked about, emulating words into action and clinching another gold medal, successfully defending his title as well. It seemed he was on a rampant record-breaking run as his initial throws were alone enough to get him onto the top of the podium.
With a first throw of 69.11 metres, the 26-year-old broke his own Paralympics record, establishing a new, as his Tokyo gold-medal winning effort of 68.59 metres was thumped. It was the second throw of 70.59 metres which turned out to be his ultimate best as he bettered his first throw and the previous recorded Paralympics throws. It is noteworthy that even his third attempt of 66.66 metres was getting him gold until then.
He committed a foul in his fourth attempt and sent the javelin to 69.04 metres in the fifth. His worst throw arrived in his final attempt as he registered 66.57 metres but nonetheless topped all his nine competitors with the second humongous effort. This is India’s 3rd gold at the ongoing Games and a 14th overall medal.
