Sumit Nagal ousted from US Open after defeat against Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor

New Delhi: India’s top tennis player Sumit Nagal crashed out of the US Open after suffering a first-round defeat against Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor. Nagal suffered from the beginning, struggling with his first serve and winning only 61 percent of those points to go down 1-6, 3-6, 6-7 to his Dutch opponent, who won 87 percent of his serve points.

In a match which lasted two hours and 20 minutes, the Indian player managed to break his opponent twice while Griekspoor converted six of his 11 break chances in the contest. The 27-year-old found a bit of confidence later in the second set as he bettered his performance giving some fight to the Dutch player. However, he was caught wrong footed and went down subsequently in the second set too.

Nagal improves game in the third set

Sumit Nagal improved his game by making some late improvisations in the final set of the match by giving a close fight to the Dutchman but ultimately, he succumbed to lose the game. Nagal’s campaign does not end at the last Grand Slam of the season as he will be competing in the men’s doubles competition as well. In the men’s doubles, India will have Rohan Bopanna, Yuki Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji and Nagal playing with different partners.

The Indian tennis player began the season on a high as he made it to the Australian Open main draw form the qualifiers and kept making improvement in his ranking as he secured his passage in the main draws of all the Grand Slams. While he won a main draw round in Melbourne, in the following Majors, he fell at the first hurdle.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic started his US Open campaign on a high with a first round victory while Dominic Thiem faced a fist-round exit.
