New Delhi: While it’s not uncommon to see siblings play tennis on the professional circuit, it’s rather unusual when two sisters and twin sisters play each other in the same match.  The remarkable confrontation happened in the doubles draw of the Junior Australian Open where twin sisters Annika and Kristina Penickova took on Alena and Jana Kovackova, also sisters.

What’s more remarkable was the fact that the twins and the two sisters were dressed in the same outfit. All four players went toe-to-toe in a thrilling semi-final but in the end, the Penickovas clinched an exhilarating 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 win in the super tie-break to qualify for the final.

While the tournament ended in a heartbreak for the Czech Republic duo, The American twins will face a British-Australian pair of Hannah Klugman and Emerson Jones in the summit clash.

The sibling power

The professional tennis circuit has witnessed several siblings blossom on the court. The Williams and Pliskova, the Radwanska sisters, the Murray brothers,  Zverev brothers have all made their mark in the world of tennis over the years.

The William sisters – Serena and Venus – are one of the most famous and successful sibling duos in the history of tennis. Between them, the Williams sisters have won 30 Grand Slam singles titles – 23 for Serena, seven for Venus – 122 singles trophies. As a pair, the Williams have won 14 Slams and an Olympic doubles title.

Meanwhile, the Bryans are regarded as the GOATs of doubles tennis. Bob and Mike Bryan boast an incredible record winning a remarkable 119 titles together, 16 Grand Slams, 39 Masters 1000, and four ATP Finals. The duo also won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and the Davis Cup in 2007. Bob and Mike ruled the ATP chart for 438 weeks and 139 of them in a row.

If Penickovas win the junior title in 2025, it can be the start of a long and incredible sibling journey for the twins on WTA circuit.
