New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) picked its best team of the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024 which features six players from the title-winning Indian squad. The squad comprises of players hailing from four participant nations and is headlined by Rohit Sharma as the skipper. It also has a notable miss in the form of Virat Kohli, who had a dismal run with the bat except for gaining back the momentum in the all-important final.
Rohit was adjudged the skipper due to his captaincy skills and for also scoring 257 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 156. Even he went through a hollow run before returning to form in the Australia Super 8 clash and the semi-final clash against England that followed. His innings in both these games were major reasons why India headed into the final of the T20 World Cup.
The wicketkeeping duties were handed to Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan who was the leading run-getter of the tournament, scoring 257 runs at a strike rate of 156. He was key in many games for his side and also helped them book a semi-final spot. Nicholas Pooran was the standout player for the West Indies and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was included to strengthen the middle-order.
Suryakumar Yadav did well for India in the tournament but failed with the bat in the final. However, he turned the tables in the field with one of the finest catches of the tournament and his crucial innings against the USA, Afghanistan, and England earned him a spot in the team. The Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel starred for their side throughout the marquee event and made it to the top seven of the team.
Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan also made it to the team of the tournament as a spin-bowling all-rounder like Axar, picking up 14 wickets in the tournament. Next was the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah (Player of the Tournament), and Arshdeep Singh and Fazalhaq Farooqi who were the join-highest wicket-takers of the tournament. Meanwhile, South African speedster Anrich Nortje, who bagged 15 wickets equalling Bumrah, was named as the 12th man.
