New Delhi: Afghanistan became the fourth and final team to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 after recording a historic victory against Bangladesh in their final Super Eight match at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent on Monday, June 25. Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs via DLS method in a rain-affected clash to enter their maiden T20 World Cup semi-final.
Their win also confirmed the final four teams who will feature in the semi-finals and the complete schedule of the knockout stage of the tournament. After 24 days of scintillating action in the US and the Caribbean, the four best teams from the tournament will battle it out for a spot in the all-important final which is set to be played on Saturday, June 29.
India and Afghanistan qualified for the semi-finals from Group 1 while South Africa and England made it to the top four from Group 2 of the Super Eight. India defeated Australia by 24 runs in their final Super 8 game on Monday to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament and become the first team to qualify from Group 1.
India will take on defending champions England in the second semi-final on Thursday, June 27. England qualified for the semis after recording a thumping 10-wicket win against USA. Jos Buttler led from the front as the defending champions chased down the target of 116 runs in just 9.4 overs to better their net run rate and make it to the semis.
History-makers Afghanistan will be up against unbeaten South Africa in the first semi-final on Thursday, June 27. Afghanistan pulled off back-to-back impressive wins against Australia and Bangladesh to make it to the top four while the Proteas beat England, USA and West Indies in the Super Eight to book their spot in the semis.
