Tamil Nadu govt comes to rescue NHAI, takes up 3 major projects, details here

Chennai: To put an end to further delay and to expedite works, Tamil Nadu Highway Department’s National Highways wing has taken up four-laning of three major highways including Thoothukudi-Kanniyakumari NH, Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi route, and Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam route.For the first time, the state highway department is carrying out the national highway works.

In order to reduce the workload of the national highway department, the most important four-lane road projects in Tamil Nadu have been transferred to the state highway department.This is the first time that the highways department of the state government is handling such multi-crore projects. The NHAI has also transferred several small projects to the Tamil Nadu government.

The state highway department is going to take up the bypass roads in Vellur, Vettavalam, Thiruvaiyaru, and other areas of the national highway instead of the national highway department. The value of these project works is fixed at Rs.559.17. Also, Rs.639.18 crore has been allocated for the construction of the Coimbatore – Sathyamangalam – Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border road.

The Union Government has approved the widening of 120 km of road from East Coast Road to Thoothukudi – Kanyakumari via Tiruchendur. It has allocated Rs.393.33 crore to acquire the required land.

11,872 kms road in Tamil Nadu to be re laid before 2026   

In a parallel development, roads running to a total length of 11,872 kms covering 20 corporations and 100 municipalities will be re-laid by 2026. According to statement , a total of 9,346km of roads will be re-laid under TN Road Infrastructure Project, Kalaignar Nagarapura Salai Mempattu Thittam scheme, state and central finance commission funds and 2,526km of roads will be relaid using special state govt funds.
