Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed Municipal, Revenue and Veterinary officials to submit a report on the stray dog menace in the state and the measures they have taken to curb the menace and prevent attacks on children.
This comes after several children in the state have been either attacked or killed by stray dogs. The High Court bench comprising of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Anil Kumar, highlighted that the situation is urgent and needs immediate action from officials.
The court expressed concern over the young lives lost and criticised the state administration for the lack of effective measures to prevent such tragedies.
A boy named Pradeep lost his life in 2023 in Amberpet area of the city after stray dogs attacked him. In recent times, a six-year-old boy named Vishal was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs recently in Patancheru, Sangreddy district of Telangana. The High Court opined that if due precautions had been taken and all stray dogs had been vaccinated, another life would not have been lost and took suo motu cognizance of the case and is monitoring the response of the state government.
Chief Justice Aradhe stated that mere compensation to the families of victims is not enough and urged government officials to come up with effective policies to make sure these incidents don’t occur.
The bench asked them the extent to which the guidelines of the Supreme Court are being followed. The hearing has been adjourned to July 10 after the court directed officials to submit a status report.
