New Delhi: A shocking study by experts from the University of California, Berkeley, found traces of lead, arsenic, mercury, iron and copper in tampons, a commonly used feminine hygiene product. Researchers said that this is by far the first study to have discovered metal in tampons and some of them like lead and arsenic are particularly toxic. These metals were earlier associated with health problems such as diabetes, dementia, infertility, heart diseases, cancer and even endocrine and nervous system disorders.
How does arsenic in tampons affect health?
Researchers said that the negative effects are likely even when one is exposed to the chemicals in small portions as it is prolonged. And not just tampons, metals like arsenic and lead can also be found in food, water and air. The body has its own set of mechanisms to deal with them all. Experts in the study found that the body’s natural detoxification process can help handle small portions of these substances without many potent side effects.
Researchers also said that while the findings are concerning, they are no reason for people to get rid of tampons immediately until further studies are conducted to verify the authenticity of possible negative outcomes. However, the findings still underlined the need for further investigation in the area to prevent long-term negative effects on health, also to ensure that they are safe for use. Alternatively, experts said that one can use period pants and menstrual cups.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Deepthi Bawa, Senior Consultant Gynecologist and IVF Specialist, Laparoscopic & Cosmetic, Gynaecology at SPARSH Hospital for Women and Children, the expert explained how toxic metals like arsenic can affect health.
“The presence of arsenic and other toxic metals in tampons is deeply worrisome. Arsenic, in particular, is a known carcinogen and can have severe health implications when absorbed through mucous membranes. Exposure to arsenic can lead to skin lesions, developmental effects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity, and an increased risk of cancer. The reproductive system can be particularly vulnerable, potentially affecting fertility and pregnancy,” said Dr Bawa.
“The presence of other metals like lead, mercury, nickel, copper, and iron can also cause various health issues, ranging from allergic reactions and infections to long-term organ damage. The liver, kidneys, and nervous system are especially at risk from chronic exposure. It is crucial that rigorous testing and regulation of menstrual products are enforced. Use of products like tampons in a long run can lead to major health implications. Other menstrual products also cause health complications similar to tampons. Alternatives such as organic cotton tampons, menstrual cups, or reusable pads made from safe materials should be considered to minimize exposure to harmful substances,” the expert added.
