Team India reach Sri Lanka for white-ball series – WATCH

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team has landed in Sri Lanka for a white-ball series that begins from July 27.

They will first engage in a three-match T20I series from July 27 followed by a three-game ODI series from August 2.

The Indian T20I team will sport a new look after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja from the 20-over format.

The trio were part of the T20 World winning team in the Caribbean last month. Rohit was the captain of the team that won the World Cup after 17 years.

The T20I team will now be led by Suryakumar Yadav, wo was chosen as captain over Hardik Pandya, the designated vice-captian of the T20 World Cup winning team.

But the all-rounder’s suspect fitness issue went against him as the BCCI wanted someone who is a certainty in the team, strengthening the case of Yadav.

“Hardik very important player but his fitness is a concern. Becomes difficult for selectors/coach to play him every game. We wanted a captain who was available to play all games,” Agarkar said on Monday.

“We wanted someone who was likely to be available more often. Surya is one of best T20 batters and as captain he is likely to play all games and he has all the necessary qualities to succeed.

“We think he is a deserving captain and we will see how he fits into the role.”

It will be new head coach Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment since taking over from Rahul Dravid. He said he is ready to take up the challenge.

“I am taking over a very, very successful team. T20 World champions, runners-up in the WTC and ODI World Cup,” Gambhir said.

“I don’t like complicating thing and ultimately it is player’s team with our job is to make players happy.”

Under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, India will play in three T20Is and three ODIs in Sri Lanka.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
