New Delhi: The T20 World Cup winning team’s victory parade began in Mumbai after a two-hour delay on Thursday, with the victorious team members aboard an open-air bus amidst a sea of adoring fans.
The Indian team arrived in Mumbai at around 5 pm and departed the airport to get in an open-air bus for the parade that will begin from Nariman Point and end at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
The airplane that carried them to Mumbai was given a grand water salute after a special victory parade by the Mumbai airport authorities.
But the victory procession was delayed as the Marine drive stretch of South Mumbai descended into complete chaos, forcing the two-hour bus parade began after 7.30 pm.
The Wankhede Stadium has been thrown open to the fans, which filled up within minutes in anticipation of celebrating the victory with the winning stars.
Thousands waited with bated breath to catch a glimpse of the players, either at the airport or on the streets, while getting drenched in intermittent rain amid extreme humidity.
Inside the Wankhede Stadium, the DJ kept the expectant and rain-drenched crowd entertained with popular songs.

Earlier in the day, the team landed in Delhi from the Caribbean were they were stuck for days because of hurricane Beryl after beating South Africa by seven runs in the final to in the World Cup last Saturday.
After reaching the country, the team cut a cake specially made to commemorate their victory at their team hotel before proceeding to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence.
The team were invited to a breakfast party by the PM at his residence where they chatted Modi for around two hours.
The team members wore Indian jerseys with the word ‘Champions’ written on the front as BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah gifted a special No.1 jersey with ‘Namo’ written at the back to the PM.
Modi and the players wrote on social media that it was an excellent meeting to mark the momentous occassion of the team winning the World Cup.
