Telangana: BRS loses deposits in eight Lok Sabha constituencies

Hyderabad: In the now concluded Lok Sabha elections, ex-CM KCR’s party Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) faced a total rout as the party candidates lost deposits in 8 Lok Sabha constituencies out of 17 constituencies and could not win even one seat in the lower house of the parliament.

BRS candidates failed to secure enough votes in constituencies such as Adilabad, Nizamabad, Zaheerabad, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella and Mahabubnagar to keep their deposits. In 14 constituencies, candidates of the BRS secured third position and second in two others.

Congress came third in Hyderabad constituency but still lost its deposit, making it the only constituency in which the grand old party lost its deposit. In eight other constituencies, Congress candidates came in second position and secured their deposits.

BJP lost deposits in two constituencies, Mahabubad and Khammam, where its candidates finished third. In seven other seats, party candidates managed to retain deposits.

Candidates who secure at least one-sixth of the total vote are entitled to retain their deposits as per Representation of the People Act, 1951.

BRS vote-share plummets in Telangana:

The vote-share of BRS plummeted from 37.35 percent in 2023 Assembly elections to 16.68 percent in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Much of the BRS vote is said to be captured by the BJP.

Congress and BJP secured eight seats each in Parliamentary elections 2024 held on May 13. Congress’ vote share stands at 41 percent, making it the single largest party in Telangana. This is an improvement from 2023 Assembly elections when the vote share of Congress was 39.4 percent.

BJP’s vote share in 2024 Lok Sabha elections stood at 35.08, which is an enormous improvement from 13.90 percent in 2023 Assembly elections.

Threat of exodus from BRS:

BRS faces a challenge to keep its flock together as there was an exodus of lawmakers from the party even in the run up to Lok Sabha elections. Though it won 39 seats in the Assembly, three MLAs already joined Congress. Analysts predict that it’s only a matter of time before more MLAs jump ship to either Congress or the BJP.

In 14 constituencies, candidates of the BRS secured third position and second in two others. The vote-share of BRS plummeted from 37.35 percent in 2023 Assembly elections to 16.68 percent in 2024 Lok Sabha elections.  Telangana States News India: Top News India, States News, States News Headlines, Online State News India, State Politics news
