Telangana High Court asks media to show restraint in phone-tapping case

Hyderabad:  Telangana High Court on Wednesday urged the media to exercise restraint in the phone-tapping case.

On June 3, a special bench consisting of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Vinod Kumar took Suo Motu cognizance of the case after Deccan Chronicle newspaper revealed that mobile phone of one of the HC judges was tapped.

The English daily reported that N Bhujanga Rao, Additional Superintendent of police, who is arrested in the case, admitted that the mobile phone of HC judge K Sarath was tapped along with many other politicians, journalists as part of the tapping operation.

‘Don’t reveal names, phone numbers of judges’: HC

In its hearing on Wednesday, the high court asked media to not go into private lives and make unnecessary comments, do not reveal names, phone numbers, photos of judges and their family members.

The next hearing has been adjourned to July 23.

The state government has filed a counter in this case and stated that the case is being investigated and the accused have been arrested.

The operation was carried out during the tenure of the BRS government and was orchestrated by Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) officer T Prabhakar Rao, who is absconding.

Another arrested SIB officer Praneeth Rao collected details of personal lives of judges, leaders of opposition and tracked their mobile phones via GPS surveillance.
