New Delhi: New Australian Open women’s champion Madison Keys has zoomed into the top 10 of the WTA rankings while men’s champ Jannik Sinner strengthened his grip in at top in the ATP rankings after defending his crown in Melbourne.
Keys defeated top seed and World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in three sets on Sunday to claim her maiden Grand Slam title. She has now moved from No. 14 to match her career best No.7 spot.
Keys became one the of the four Americans to be in the top 10 currently, accompanying Coco Gauff (No. 3), Jessica Pegula (No. 6) and Emma Navarro, who dropped one place to No. 9.
Depite being beaten in the final and falling short of completing a three-peat of Australian Open titles, Sabalenka remains the No.1 while Iga Swiatek, who fell to Keys in the semi-finals stays just behind at the second spot.
Paris Olympic gold medal winner Zheng Qinwen slipped three slots to No. 8, while former No. 2 Spaniard Paola Badosa jumped two positions to complete the top 10 after her run to the semi-final at Melbourne Park.
No change in men’s top four
No change occurred in the top four of men’s rankings as Sinner maintained his top spot with a hold of the Australian Open title, beating Alexander Zverev in the straight sets for his second successive triumph Down Under.
Zverev, who advanced to the title round after 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic withdrew midway in their match with a hamstring injury, remained No. 2 behind Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz was beaten by Djokovic in the quarters but kept his No. 3 spot intact as did Taylor Fritz at No. 4. After his bad-tempered second round loss in Melbourne, Daniil Medvedev slid two slots to No. 7.
Djokovic jumped up by a spot to No.6 to be slotted behind Casper Ruud while Tommy Paul is the new entrant, reaching his career-high No. 9 spot after entering the Australian Open quarter-finals.
