‘There is extra confidence’: Najmul Hossain Shanto on Pak series triumph

New Delhi: Bangladesh cricket team captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said that the team is charged with additional confidence following its historic Test series win in Pakistan earlier this month. The Tigers not only won their first Test match against their Asian neighbours but also swept the two-match series 2-0.

Bangladesh registered their first two Test wins over Pakistan since 2001, the first Test win in Rawalpindi was the first in  their 14 meetings. The terrific run extended Bangladesh’s away Test wins to eight.

The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side will face Asian powerhouse India in the upcoming two-match Test series, starting on September 19.

“This (India tour) will be a challenging series for us but after having a good series against Pakistan, there is an extra confidence in our team as well as among all the people of the country,” Shanto told reporters in Dhaka before departing for India, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“Every series is an opportunity and we will play to win both the matches. (We will focus on) the things that we need to do for the win…the process is important and we need to do our job properly,” he added.

Bangladesh will bank on the experience of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan along with the emergence of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The likes of left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who troubled Indian batters during their visit in 2022, will be handy with youngster Nayeem Hasan having picked 36 wickets in 10 Tests.

“Our spin and pace is in a good frame. But still if you compare the teams, I feel our pacers are relatively less experienced compared to them,” Najmul said.

“Spin wise we are close to them but experience wise I would keep them ahead but our spinners can bowl in any condition and I can say this much – that all the players, whether pacers, spinners or batters, whoever will play, every player will give a hundred percent. The difference can be made when we play as a team,” he added.

Bangladesh will play their first Test against India at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match will be played from September 19 to 23.
