New Delhi: Team India showed what real home dominance is as they defeated Bangladesh by a huge margin of 280 runs in the first Test of the two-match series in Chennai on Sunday. Playing at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, the two teams concluded the game on the penultimate day itself as the Indian bowlers seemed to be in a rush to pick the remaining six overnight wickets.
Bangladesh needed 357 runs to pull the game in their favour and for once it looked as if skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan were set for a run-chase but Ravichandran Ashwin, the homeboy, decided to go against it. He soon struck on Day 4, first removing Shakib and picking two more wickets to register a six-wicket haul, having already bagged three on the previous day.
He was handed the Player of the Match award for his all-round heroics as he shone with the bat as well in the first innings. On the first day of the game, Ashwin resuscitated India with a blistering ton and produced a record partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. For India, the heroes were the two spin-all-rounders and the centurions Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. Jasprit Bumrah played his part at times when India needed a breakthrough.
Bangladesh entered the game with a lot of confidence on their back, having pummeled Pakistan in their home with a historic 2-0 Test series win. They came with similar expectations but were given a reality check by the hosts.
