New Delhi: Dashing Tilak Varma made a statement on Wednesday after he smashed his maiden century in T20Is, lifting India to a powerful first innings score against South Africa in Centurion. Asked to bat first, India lost the wicket of Sanju Samson (0) on the second ball of the first over but then Tilak, along with Abhishek Sharma (50) steadied the ship for India in the crucial match.
While Abhishek was out after scoring a fiery fifty, Tilak continued the power-hitting getting to his fifty in just 32 balls and then completing his maiden ton in T20Is in just 51 deliveries. With the help of his power-packed knock (107 not out off 56 balls), India managed a mammoth total of 219/6 in the stipulated 20 overs at the SuperSport Park.

By virtue of the blazing ton scored against the Proteas, Tilak Varma became the youngest Indian player to score a century in T20Is against South Africa and the second-youngest in the overall list of Indian players.

Tilak’s sizzling century in the shortest format was laden with 8 boundaries and 7 sixes as he took the Proteas bowlers to the cleaners. Tilak along with Abhishek stitched 107 runs in 52 balls after Samson was dismissed for a consecutive duck in the series. The stylish player also became the 12th batter to score a century for India in men’s T20Is. No other team has more than six batters scoring a T20I ton for them.
Apart from these two batters, all-rounder Hardik Pandya scored 18 runs while debutant Ramandeep Singh smashed quickfire 15 off just 6 deliveries. For the Proteas, Simelane and Maharaj picked two wickets apiece.
