New Delhi: After an ordinary show from the Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024, India’s para-athletes will be hoping to make up for it at the Paralympics 2024 which is set to get underway in Paris on August 28. India have sent a strong contingent of 84 para-athletes for the Paris Paralympics, their biggest ever in the history of the competition.
The Indian contingent will be eyeing a record show at the Paralympic Games this year having won an impressive 19 medals in the last edition in Tokyo. India recorded their best-ever show at the Tokyo Paralympics with 19 medals which was more than the country’s combined tally in all previous editions. India had won a total of only 12 medals from the 1968 Paralympics in Tel Aviv to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
India won a total of 5 gold medals, 8 silver medals and six bronze medals at the Tokyo Games and will be hoping to go a notch higher this time around. The likes of javelin thrower Sumit Antil and shooter Avani Lekhara among others will be strong contenders to win gold medals for India at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
How many sports will India participate in at Paralympics 2024?
The Indian contingent will take part in a total of 12 sports at the Paris Paralympics 2024, including the likes of shooting, archery, athletics, badminton, cycling and judo among others. India will have their largest representation in athletics with a total of 28 para-athletes taking part in various events. India’s 84-member contingent consists of 52 male and 32 female para-athletes for the Paris Paralympics.
Where did India finish on the medals tally in Tokyo Paralympics?
India finished 24th on the Tokyo Paralympics medals table with a total of 19 medals, including 5 gold medals. Sumit Antil, Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal, Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar won gold medals for India at the last edition of the Games in Tokyo. India will be hoping to breach the 20-medal mark this time around with an even bigger contingent.
