Time to Chill Out? Why ‘Temperature Matters’ this World Refrigeration Day

New Delhi: World Refrigeration Day is observed on June 26 every year to raise awareness about the importance of refrigeration technologies in everyday life. It also increases the profile of the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump sectors. The day coincides with the birth date of Lord Kelvin on June 26, 1824. Lord Kelvin, a renowned physicist, made significant contributions to the field of thermodynamics, which is the basis of refrigeration technology. It is an international day that the World Refrigeration Day Secretariat in Derbyshire, England, established. Every year, the day is observed with a new theme, and this year’s theme is ‘Temperature Matters’.

World Refrigeration Day 2024 Theme: Temperature Matters

This year’s World Refrigeration Day (WRD) theme is “Temperature Matters”.

This year’s campaign will explore the extensive and significant effects of the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industry. These effects go beyond efficient cooling and heating to include important aspects of indoor environmental quality. They encompass energy efficiency, food safety, healthcare, and comfort in various settings, such as homes, offices, and hospitals.

According to the founder of World Refrigeration Day, Stephen Gill, “Across the thermodynamic spectrum, from high thermal extremes to the cryogenic depths of absolute zero on Kelvin’s scale, temperature connects us all. It regulates our comfort, sustains our health, preserves our sustenance, and supports the tools of modern life. In every degree of life, temperature matters – absolutely.”

This year’s campaign will also explore the profound significance of temperature regulation in society, such as in the preservation of food, the operation of medical equipment, and the comfort of living and working spaces. It will highlight the important role this industry plays in maintaining these functions.

By investigating the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, heat, and energy transfer, this industry’s prominence will endure in an era marked by increasing energy demands and climate change. The discussion underscores the crucial role of efficient temperature control in fostering sustainable development and human comfort. It’s not just about mitigating environmental impacts but also about ensuring our well-being and quality of life.

World Refrigeration Day 2024: Why was this started?

Refrigeration consultant Stephen Gill, former president of the Institute of Refrigeration in the UK, believed in the idea of the day. In October 2018, ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) supported Gill and World Refrigeration Day.

In January 2019, ASHRAE awarded Gill the John F James International Award in Atlanta. In February, the United Nations Environment Programme pledged support for the day at the Paris UNEP national ozone officers meeting. The first World Refrigeration Day was held on June 26, 2019.

The day celebrates the people and technologies that shape our world, a world that thrives on temperature-controlled environments. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of our industry professionals and a reminder of the global support we have from industry, professional groups, scientific and engineering associations, governments, and individuals.

World Refrigeration Day 2024 Theme: Temperature Matters, chosen for this year’s World Refrigeration Day, highlights the sector’s extensive technical expertise in providing cooled and heated environments. It also raises awareness about the importance of temperature control in various applications and situations that affect our daily lives, such as keeping our food fresh, maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, and preserving life-saving medications.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
