New Delhi: Roberto “Loli” Linguanotto, widely credited as the inventor of the beloved Italian dessert tiramisu passed away at the age of 81 on 29 July 2024. As per the reports, Linguanotto’s legacy is forever intertwined with the delectable coffee-flavoured dessert, tiramisu, which gained widespread popularity in the 1980s. His name will be eternally linked to this sumptuous treat, celebrated and enjoyed by dessert enthusiasts around the world.

Story behind the great – Tiramisu!
One story goes that Linguanotto accidentally spilt mascarpone cheese into a bowl of sugar and eggs. Later, along with co-inventor Alba di Pillo-Campeol, the wife of Le Beccherie’s owner Ado Campeol, he decided to add espresso-soaked ladyfingers to the mix. This happy accident led to the creation of the now-famous dessert.
Gigi Padovani, a journalist and close friend of Roberto Linguanotto, co-wrote the book Tiramisù with Linguanotto’s wife, Clara. He shared in an interview that the dessert quickly became a popular item at Le Beccherie, served on a round tray with coffee-soaked ladyfingers and layers of cream and mascarpone.
In 1983, the tiramisu recipe was first published in a Treviso food magazine. Le Beccherie then introduced it to Venice, and it eventually gained worldwide fame, becoming widely known from the 1990s onwards. Although Roberto Linguanotto was known for his shy and reserved nature, he was well-liked by his colleagues. He spent several years working abroad before eventually returning to his home region of Veneto.
