New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three-match home Test series against New Zealand on October 11. The Men in Blue will look to strengthen their position at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) table.
India will play three Test matches against Tom Latham and Co. in Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai. Rohit Sharma and Co. whitewashed Bangladesh by 2-0 in the Test series recently while New Zealand suffered a heavy Test series against Sri Lanka. Tim Southee stepped down from captaincy after the series loss. The Blackcaps have won only two Test matches in India with the last one coming back in 1988.
No Mohammed Shami in India’s squad
India’s premium pacer Mohammed Shami is still not part of Team India’s squad for New Zealand series. The right-arm pacer has been out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to an ankle injury.
Shami underwent surgery earlier this year and has been doing rehabilitation since then at the NCA but he failed to recover in time of the squad announcement. At the CAB annual award ceremony, The fast bowler revealed that he was working hard on his fitness to make a comeback in the national team but admitted that he didn’t want to rush things up.
He also revealed that he would first play matches for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and then would make a comeback in Team India. Shami also recently criticised the media for spreading fake rumours about his availability in the upcoming Australia series. But his exclusion from the New Zealand Test series has raised concerns as to whether he will be ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy or not.
Jasprit Bumrah named as vice-captain
The star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been named as India’s vice-captain for the New Zealand Test series. As per reports, Rohit Sharma will miss the opening Test match against Australia due to personal reasons and all eyes were on selectors whether they would name a vice-captain for the New Zealand series as there was no official vice-captain for Bangladesh series. However, the BCCI has confirmed Bumrah as Rohit’s deputy.
