Alan Jones, a well-known Australian radio host, has been arrested in connection with allegations of indecent assault, groping, and inappropriate touching of multiple young men, local media reported on Monday.
New South Wales police stated that child abuse squad detectives arrested an 83-year-old man in Sydney as part of an investigation into offences allegedly committed between 2001 and 2019. While the police did not name the suspect, reports identify Jones as the accused.
Jones, 83, gained fame hosting Sydney’s popular breakfast show on 2GB radio for nearly two decades before leaving the station in 2020. Known for his conservative views and sharp questioning of prime ministers, Jones has also faced several defamation lawsuits throughout his career.
The allegations against Jones first came to light last year when the Sydney Morning Herald reported that police were investigating claims of indecent assault involving young men. Jones, who has previously denied similar allegations, has not commented on the recent arrest.
A former coach of Australia’s national rugby union team and a speechwriter for former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, Jones has been off-air since leaving 2GB and had moved to working with a digital start-up. Investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
