New Delhi: One of the most important wickets that decided the fate of the T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa was that of David Miller. Suryakumar Yadav produced a sensational catch to get rid of the last dangerous Proteas player, who possessed the potential to take the team across the finish line in the last over.
Meanwhile, Miller has opened up on how he felt after the team’s close loss against India in the summit clash. The Proteas player said that he was ‘gutted’ as this was the toughest pill to swallow when the valiant South African side went down in the final clash. But the flamboyant batter also said that despite the heartbreak, the team will continue to push boundaries in the future.
Words can’t explain the feeling, says Miller
Shedding the unwanted tag of perennial ‘chokers’, the Proteas had marched into their maiden T20 World Cup final unbeaten, however, they faltered at the final hurdle.
“I am gutted! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit,” Miller posted an Instagram story late on Monday.
Ahead of the summit clash, the South African team had a sensational run in the tournament, edging past every opponent who came across their way. They were the second team in the event who remained undefeated till the last apart from India.
“This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar,” he wrote.
South Africa had looked on course to a memorable win needing 30 runs in as many balls. However, Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, fashioned a remarkable turnaround picking the key wicket of Heinrich Klaasen followed by Marco Jansen.
With Miller at the crease and 16 needed off the last over, the Proteas still remained hopeful but a spectacular catch on the boundary rope by Suryakumar ended their show. It was the closest South Africa had come to winning a title, having made seven semifinal exits in ICC global events.
