Dixville Notch: In the early hours of Election Day, the tiny New Hampshire town of Dixville Notch upheld its decades-long tradition of midnight voting, with former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris each receiving three votes.
Located near the U.S.-Canada border, Dixville Notch has only six registered voters, who cast their ballots immediately after the clock struck twelve. This early voting ritual, dating back to the 1960 election, ensures that Dixville Notch often reports the first U.S. election results.
Why Does Dixville Notch Vote at Midnight?
Dixville Notch’s midnight voting tradition, which began in the 1960s, has its origins in the neighbouring town of Hart’s Location, which first implemented the practice in 1948. Midnight voting originally allowed railway workers, who were unable to vote during regular hours, to cast their ballots early.
The tradition was introduced to Dixville Notch by Neil Tillotson, a local resident, who was inspired by a reporter’s story about Hart’s Location.
This year, four Republicans and two independent voters participated in the midnight voting, reported CNN. The event was rare, as other areas in New Hampshire now rely on daytime voting. Earlier in January, Dixville Notch voters similarly cast their ballots at midnight for the Republican primary, all supporting former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
Speaking to a leading daily, Les Otten, one of the town’s six voters, described Dixville Notch’s midnight vote as “a civics lesson for the country,” highlighting its role as a symbol of American electoral enthusiasm.
