New Delhi: A total of 11 bikes crashed killing two riders leading to the cancellation of the British Supersport Championship race. Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, sustained fatal injuries at turn one on the race on Monday.
They lost their lives in a “major chain reaction” incident despite medical perosnnel rushing onto the scene for treatment, reports the BBC.
New Zealand’s Richardson was competing for the Astro-JJR Hippo Suzuki team, while British rider Jenner was racing for the Rapid Honda team in the third race of the weekend.
Jenner died after a serious head injury even after receiving treatment at the circuit’s medical centre after being initially attended to on the side of the track.
Richardson too was treated trackside before being moved to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest injures and reportedly passed away before arrival.
The crash was beamed live on TV as one rider lost control while emerging from the first turn tht led to bikes skidding across the tarmac and crashing into each other with pne bike even catching fire.
MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) confirmed that a third rider named Tom Tunstall, 47, had reportedly sustained “significant injuries”.
“At the start of this afternoon’s Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park, exiting turn one, Old Hall corner on the first lap, there was a chain reaction incident involving 11 riders falling,” MSVR said in an official statement.
“The race was immediately stopped and trackside medical services deployed. Due to the extreme severity of the incident and ongoing medical intervention, the remainder of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship event was cancelled.
“This catastrophic accident has tragically resulted in two riders being fatally injured, and another sustaining significant injuries.”
MSVR also detailed the extent of injuries for the riders.
“Owen Jenner, 21, was initially treated trackside and then taken to the circuit medical centre, where despite further resuscitation treatment he died from a catastrophic head injury,” MSVR said.
“Shane Richardson, 29, was initially treated trackside and then taken to the circuit medical centre before being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest injuries. He died prior to arrival.
“Tom Tunstall, 47, was initially treated on the track and was taken to the circuit medical centre. He was later transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with significant back and abdominal injuries.”
