UEFA Champions League 2024/25: Key fixtures from Wednesday’s matchday seven

New Delhi: The UEFA Champions League returned after a long gap with matchday seven beginning with Liverpool and Barcelona confirming their spot in the last 16 round. With nine more games left, the results from Tuesday have only made the knockout stage appearance race tighter.

Defending champions Real Madrid are on the brink of elimination and winning is the only way forward for them to give themselves a chance to stay in the competition. Manchester City and PSG will both come to their contest to play an extra two-legged-fixture in February. Manchester City are currently placed in 24th while PSG are 26th.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City (1:30 AM IST, January 23rd)

Paris Saint-Germain are currently leading in the Ligue 1, nine points clear at the top but their campaign in the Champions League hasn’t gone their way. They started their campaign with a win, only to go winless in their next four games before taking a win against Salzburg in December. Since that game, they have been on an eight-game winning streak. They are currently outside the top 24 and they require four points at least in their remaining two fixtures to have a chance at the playoffs.

For Manchester City, they have been on a season revival with regular wins over the past few weeks. Their last outing in the competition was a 2-0 loss against Juventus, coming during a phase which was their lowest point in the last eight years. In their last five games, they have taken four wins, including an 8-0 win over Salford City in the FA Cup last weekend. However, since the run also includes a 2-2 draw against Brentford. So far they have taken just two wins in the competition which has put their appearance in the next season at stake.

Real Madrid vs RB Salzburg (1:30 AM IST, January 23rd)

Title holders Real Madrid have much more to fight for when they take the field at Santiago Bernabeu. Their season at La Liga was mostly playing catchup until now when they are seven points ahead of Barca and two points ahead of Atletico Madrid at the top. However, they have lost the Super Spanish Cup to Barca which puts the morale down slightly. In their first six games in the Champions League, they have taken three wins and three losses and are currently placed 22nd, taking just nine points.

RB Salzburg have won only one game in the Champions League and lost the rest five. This means they have little to play for, though mathematically, they still have a chance to reach the top 24. With their remaining two games set to be against the two Madrid teams, it is almost impossible for them to achieve this feat. So far they have scored just thrice and conceded 18 times, which shows the kind of form the side is in.
