3 in 3! England’s flawless record chasing in T20 World Cup semi-finals huge concern for India

New Delhi: England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bowl first in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final against India at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. Buttler’s decision wasn’t a surprising one considering England’s brilliant record while chasing in the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

The toss took place after a delay of over an hour due to rain in Guyana. England will be happy to have won the toss in the all-important clash as it gives them a huge advantage chasing. England are playing to their strength as Buttler & Co. have a star-studded batting line-up consisting of some of the finest T20 hitters in the world.

Why India should be worried in T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final?

England have a fabulous record when it comes to chasing in the semi-finals of a T20 World Cup. They have featured in a total of four semi-finals in the tournament’s history and have won three of them while chasing. The only semi-final they lost was when they batted first in the game. England won chasing when they hammered India by 10 wickets in the semi-final of the last edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022.

India posted 168 runs on the board, batting first in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final in Adelaide. England chased it down comfortably in just 16 overs with the help of half-centuries from openers Buttler and Alex Hales. England defeated Sri Lanka in 2014 and New Zealand in 2016 while batting second in the semi-finals.

To make matters worse for India, each of their five defeats in major ICC tournaments since 2021 have come while batting first. India lost the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in 2021 batting first before suffering defeats in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, 2023 World Test Championship final and 2023 ODI World Cup final after batting first.

The onus will once again be on skipper Rohit for India after his sensational knock against Australia in their last outing. A big knock from Rohit will set the tone for a big total for India which will be crucial if they want to put pressure on the star-studded England batting line-up. It remains to be seen if England will continue their winning streak while chasing in semis or if India will stop their juggernaut.
