UEFA Euro 2024: England vs Slovenia preview, predicted XI, head-to-head and team news

New Delhi:  Group C of Euro 2024 has many possible outcomes. All the four teams will be in action today. England will take on Slovenia at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne while Denmark will face Serbia in Munich. The third match of all the teams will decide their fate. With already one foot in the knockout round of the Euro 2024, England, qualified for the knockouts as the best third-placed team, can finish no lower than third in their group.

The three lions beat Serbia in nervy fashion the first time out and then were somewhat fortunate to draw with Denmark to top the group with four points. Gareth Southgate’s men will return with a solution for strongly pressing the opposition.

Meanwhile, Slovenia are nursing from their heartbreaking draw against Serbia in midweek. Matjaz Kek’s side came very close to getting all three points against the Serbs but Zan Karnicnik’s opener got cancelled out by Luka Jovic in second-half stoppage time.

Slovenia managed to hold Denmark to a draw in their group-stage opener. They can still remain optimistic as they lock horns with lacklustre England in their final group-stage fixture.

All the teams in Group C are in the hunt for a place in the group stages and anything can happen on the final matchday. But England is expected to claim the top spot as they have enough firepower to blow Slovenia.

Team News

England will be without Luke Shaw for this match as he is yet to make a return to full-team training. Southgate might make a few changes to the England side after the failed experiment of Alexander-Arnold in the midfield. Conor Gallagher, who was booked away from a ban, is expected to make a return to the starting lineup. Jude Bellingham could get dropped into a deeper role alongside Declan Rice allowing Phil Foden to operate centrally.

On the other hand, Slovenia received a scare in their last match against Serbia after their forward Benjamin Sesko failed to complete the full 90 minutes due to muscle cramps. However, he has returned to full fitness and will be eager to make a mark in the upcoming clash.

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak missed the training session while midfield duo Timi Max Elsnik and Adam Gnezda Cerin have also not been 100% operational since matchday two which leaves their participation slightly up in the air. Oblak missing out will be a shock as he made some pivotal stops against Serbia.

Head-to-Head

England and Slovenia have locked horns once previously at the 2010 FIFA World Cup group stages. The Three Lions emerged victorious by a 1-0 scoreline. So far Slovenia have faced England six times in all competitions and are yet to taste victory. Slovenia have drawn one and lost five against England.

England are aiming to make it to the knockout stages of the Euro for a fourth successive time without losing a single group stage game. Slovenia have played more Euro matches without winning at the Euro than any other nation. They have so far drawn four and lost one of their five games in the tournament.

Predicted lineup

England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Gallagher, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane

Slovenia: Oblak; Karnicnik, Brekalo, Bijol, Janza; Mlakar, Elsnik, Cerin, Stojanovic; Sporar, Sesko
