UEFA Euro 2024: Germany’s labour law prohibits Lamine Yamal to play full 90 minutes

New Delhi: Lamine Yamal is having a wonderful Euro campaign for the Spanish national team where he has already become a crucial player in the squad. He has been one of the consistent performers in the squad. Despite the high stature and the presence of big profile players such as Rodri, Alvaro Morata, Pedri and Ayemeric Laporte, it’s the 16-year-old winger who has been the focal point for the Spanish side.

Spain were up against the French team in the semi finals of the Euro 2024 campaign and it was Kylian mbappe’s cross that set up Randal Kolo Muani’s goal for France in the eighth minute, giving them an early lead over Spain. In the twenty-first minute of the game, Yamal scored an absolute banger of a goal from outside the box, making him the youngest player to score in the history of the European Championship.Yamal became the youngest player to score in a European Championship after he scored that goal against France.

Over the course of the season, Yamal proved himself as one of the most important players for Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish side after producing some worlds class performances. However, the Spanish side have been facing a massive problem due to Yamal’s age that has caused some concerns for De la Fuente.

German labour legislation states that minors are not permitted to work past 8 p.m. Even for athletes, who have some downtime, the deadline is at 11 p.m. Many of Spain’s matches thus far, including the semi-final versus France, started after 9 p.m. German time, even though their quarterfinal matchup with Germany began at 6 p.m. The Yamal would have been forced to work into 11 p.m. due to the 90 minutes of regulation time, injury time in each half, 15 minutes of break, and post-match interviews.

The Spanish coach was compelled to substitute Yamal in group stage matches against Croatia, Italy, and Albania at the 86th, 71st, and 19th minute, respectively, according to German labor laws. Yamal’s involvement after 11 PM will result in a € 30,000 fine for the Spanish football association.
