New Delhi: US men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter was relieved of his duties on Wednesday after failing in the 2024 Copa América with just three group-stage points as the hosts crashed out at the group stage. Berhalter spent a total of five years on the job, spread over two separate stints, the first of which was relatively successful. However, during his second stint with the USMNT, it became clear that the squad had stagnated under the manager.
The USMNT currently has a gifted list of players at their disposal and were expected to make a deep run into the tournament, but their early exit from the competition didn’t sit well with the fanbase as many fans wanted the manager to be sacked after his side’s poor display on home soil. A comprehensive review took place after the tournament ended for the USMNT, and Berhalter was relieved of his duties.

An intense review ended with the conclusion that the targets set by the board had not been met.
While they appreciate the manager for the progress the squad made under him, they need to win and provide results at this stage now, with the quality of players at their disposal, with the USMNT currently in the midst of their ‘golden generation.’
The aim if for the USMNT to have a new coach in place prior to the next round of International games in September. The search for their next manager is underway and they want to appoint someone quickly as the USMNT need to start their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the USA.
