New Delhi: Real Madrid were fined on Friday for its fans’ behaviour during the second leg of the Champions League play-off against Manchester City. The Spanish giants won the match 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, securing their place in the last 16 with an overall aggregate score of 6-3. However, their victory was overshadowed by a disciplinary ruling from UEFA, the governing body of European football.
On Friday, the governing body of European football UEFA revealed that the Los Blancos supporters were found guilty of “discriminatory behaviour” in the ruling. Neither television footage nor journalists present recorded any disturbances during Madrid’s 3-1 home win over Manchester City on February 19, which advanced the reigning champion to the last 16.
According to the statement released by UEFA, the fans broke Article 14 of UEFA’s disciplinary procedures, which sanctions “racism, other discriminatory behaviour, and propaganda”.
As a result of the ruling, UEFA penalised Real 30,000 euros (31,000 dollars). Furthermore, the club also faces potential repercussions including the potential closure of “at least 500 adjacent seats” at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, which has a capacity of 78,297, if more similar occurrences occur in the next two years.
❗️ UEFA have issued Real Madrid with a €30,000 fine and a two year (suspended) sentence if the discriminatory behaviour is repeated as was in the game vs. Manchester City by Real Madrid fans.

Madrid is not the only club facing repercussions. Several other clubs and national teams, including their fierce La Liga rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, have also been given similar suspended sentences for identical violations. With UEFA maintaining a strict stance on discriminatory behaviour, clubs across Europe will need to ensure their supporters adhere to the regulations to avoid severe consequences in future competitions.
