New Delhi: Australian UFC star Jack Jenkins had to be hospitalised and admitted to intensive care after suffering a dangerous throat injury during his fight against Brazil’s Gabriel Santos in the recently concluded UFC 312 event in Sydney. Santos defeated Jenkins via submission in the featherweight clash between the duo.

Jenkins made a strong start in the fight and dominated the Brazilian in the opening round of their prelims bout. He also dropped Santos with a fierce kick. However, the Brazilian gained control in the fight after Jenkins suffered a risky injury during the first round. Santos eventually went on to win the fight via submission in the third round to hand Jenkins his 2nd defeat in the UFC.

Jenkins suffers thyroid cartilage fracture

As per a report in Australian MMA, Jenkins was taken to the hospital after the bout for post-fight medicals and was discharged. However, he later had to be admitted again after scans revealed that the 31-year-old had fractured his thyroid cartilage. Jenkins had to be kept in intensive care on Sunday before being discharged on Monday.

Jenkins’ team revealed the Aussie fighter suffered the fracture during the first round, possibly from a vicious neck kick from Santos. His team revealed Jenkins told his corner after the first round that he was feeling numbness and loss of strength in his left arm. The numbness was reportedly due to air leaking into his chest and neck after a fracture in his thyroid cartilage.
