UFC star Sean Strickland angers Australian media with series of inflammatory comments

New Delhi: UFC fighter Sean Strickland has angered the Australian media with a series of provocative comments just ahead of his middleweight title fight against Dricus du Plessis coming Saturday. Australia media was all over the UFC fighter on Thursday after he criticised the country’s government and certain laws that are in place.

Australian newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, put Strickland on their back page on Thursday, urging someone to ‘knock this guy out’ after the American, who has a fight lined up at UFC 312 in Sydney in next two days, criticised the government. This is not the first time that the fighter has been in the headlines for such comments as the 33-year-old has made a number of provocative comments in fight week, which the UFC posted on its YouTube titled ‘Sean Strickland Goes Off The Rails’.

Strickland cheered and booed by fans at press con

Ahead of his next fight, Strickland, at Thursday’s news conference in Sydney, was both cheered and booed by fans present there as he criticised the country’s laws on free speech. He was also shown the Daily Telegraph’s back page, which further irked him and he started to say some provocative things.

Strickland said that he comes to this country and speaks about freedom of speech, guns and taxes and the communist media try to put him down. The American fighter further said that because the people want to control the media and are not in favour of freedom of speech. Before this, Strickland had lavished praise on the country saying that he could see himself living in Australia if it was not for the country’s ‘lack of freedoms’.

His long lecture puts a spotlight on free speech in the UFC against after insensitive comments made by American featherweight fighter Bryce Mitchell last week. Mitchell had praised Adolf Hitler, calling him a ‘good guy’ which prompted UFC president Dana White to condemn the comments as ‘beyond disgusting’.
