The UK is preparing for a turbulent night as police anticipate over 100 protests targeting immigration services organized by far-right groups. According to media reports more than 30 counter-protests are expected. 6,000 riot officers are on standby to manage the escalating unrest.
In recent days, a list of approximately 39 immigration law specialists’ offices, asylum support charities, and immigration service centers has been widely circulated on social media. The list, accompanied by inflammatory messages and calls to “mask up,” has raised concerns about targeted demonstrations planned for tonight.
This surge in violence follows the sentencing of Derek Drummond, 58, from Southport, who received a three-year prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court for violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker during unrest in Southport on July 30. Drummond is the first individual to face a substantial prison term related to the recent violence.
In response to the ongoing turmoil, Sir Keir Starmer has announced the deployment of a “standing army” of 6,000 specialist police officers to address the disruptions. This measure comes after eight days of unrest affecting cities across England and Northern Ireland.
The Crown Prosecution Service reported that another 20 individuals were charged overnight, bringing the total number of people charged to more than 140. Police chiefs have warned that those involved in the riots can “expect a knock at the door” as authorities intensify their efforts to restore order.
