Washington: The top US democratic leaders raised their voices in support of President Joe Biden while rejecting the notion that he should end his 2024 campaign for a second four-year term in the White House because of the lacklustre performance in the presidential debate against former premier Donal Trump.
With Biden away at Camp David for a long-planned family get-together, the Democratic allies acknowledged the 81-year-old Biden’s shortcomings in the nationally televised 90-minute debate in which he struggled at times to complete sentences and at one point mistakenly said he had killed off Medicare, the government’s health insurance program for older Americans.
Notably, the new CBS-YouGov poll revealed that Americans, by a 72-27 per cent margin, do not think that Biden has the “mental and cognitive health to serve as president,” a reading that was seven percentage points worse on the same question compared to three weeks ago.
However, the national polling in the US between Biden and Trump still remains a dead heat.
Biden Under Scan For Ability to Work
US President Biden has come under scrutiny over his ability to operate effectively outside the six-hour window of daylight, a revelation that Republicans are resting on as part of the election campaign.
An Axios report revealed that the 81-year-old Democrat typically functions in best conditions between 10 AM and 4 PM. When outside of this time range or when travelling abroad, he’s more prone to verbal flubs and fatigue.
The report raised concern over Biden’s fitness to serve another term as the former will be seeking re-election in the upcoming November election for the President’s office.
